Walking tours are where Active Africa started, nearly 20 years ago, when we offered travellers to chance to explore Table Mountain and Cape Town city on foot.
There is no doubt that ‘slow travel’ creates space for the most profound experiences to occur. And walking tours offer the chance to explore up close. This could be strolling the sidewalks of a bustling city or treading silently along an indistinct game trail. Both offer a more intimate perspective than the traditional means of touring in double-glazed, air-conditioned comfort.
Some of our most popular trips offer the opportunity to do walking tours through the back streets of Africa’s cities. Alternatively, we will guide you through dense coastal bush in the footsteps of the great Zulu King Tshaka. Or what about emulating the great explorers as they battled through the tangled undergrowth of impenetrable forests?
But then, a trip to Africa would not be complete without a safari. Wherever possible, we encourage travellers to step out of the comfort bubble and explore the bush on foot. It is only once one has walked the savannah on the trail of big game that one truly experiences authentic safari.
Qualified, experienced walking guides accompany all of our escorted walking tours. Our itineraries offer an alternative way of seeing the usual and an opportunity to experience the unusual. Since our mission is to promote active, healthy touring, we leave ‘adventurous’ for the truly intrepid and the over-confident. Rather, we focus on raising the heart rate with spectacular views or chance encounters with the elusive leopard at the waterhole.
WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT ON OUR WALKING TOURS?
A support van carries everything we need to ensure your comfort and safety and our guides carry the little extras that make the day special. All you carry is your own backpack with items you can’t live without. We provide walking poles and day packs where required.
