Wine and whales

Spring is the Cape’s prettiest season, with whales breaching in the bays and bright green growth in wine country.

Add the spring flowers and the Whale Coast and Hermanus offer all of these. To that end, we are offering a 3-night tour to Hermanus that focuses on wine, whales and spring flowers. Throw in a visit to a wild penguin colony and an optional kayak trip and you have 3 days packed with excitement.

Every winter, southern right whales make their way from the southern ocean to the southern coasts of Africa. Here they mate, calve and rest before making their way south again for the summer. Hermanus, which is only 90 minutes from Cape Town, offers some of the best land-based whale watching in the world.

Central to this holiday town are the steep cliffs that rise out of shallow water. It is common to sit for hours on end, watching countless whales in the bay. Furthermore, it is one of the Cape’s best locations to kayak in the company of whales.

In addition to the whales, the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley is one of South Africa’s premier wine growing regions. Known for producing superior burgundy varieties, the valley boasts an exciting collection of premium wineries. We spend a day exploring the valley and appreciating its best wines, along with the exceptional local cheeses and olive oils.
