Walking in Tanzania

When thinking of walking in Tanzania, the image conjured is of Maasai herders journeying across the plains on foot; a stereotypical vision of many visitors to Africa. Couple these vistas with the northern circuit’s unlimited game viewing and you have the ultimate walking safari opportunity.

Our dry season Tanzania walking safaris include time in the best locations in national parks, private reserves and conservation areas. They offer a range of experiences such as full day walking safaris, game drives, night drives and cultural hikes.

The Northern Serengeti is one of our favourite walking safari destinations, primarily because the plains are vast and wild. And we select camps that are located in quieter tourism sectors, but close to large densities of game. During the dry season, guests may even catch a river crossing during the Great Migration.

We include walks wherever possible, but undoubtedly the highlight of the trip for keen walkers and hikers is a full day hike on the Ngorongoro crater rim and the inevitable, informal interactions with resident Maasai villagers.

This 15-day programme showcases some of the best safari, both vehicle and walking, that northern Tanzania has to offer – if this is a first visit to Africa, be aware that it will make you want to return.

Are you a seasoned hiker? Is this a return trip to Tanzania or to Africa? You many want to consider our Serengeti Expedition. Flanked by stays in luxury tented camps, this 10 day program includes a 7-day supported trek across the eastern Serengeti with 6 nights in fly camps.
