2-day Panorama hiking tour

Our 2-day Panorama hiking trip combines the vistas of the Panorama route with hiking in the Blyde River Canyon.

On day one we explore the montane grassland, indigenous forests and fantastically shaped sandstone sentinels of the escarpment. From the trail, we enjoy stunning views to the lowveld (lowlands) 1000m /3000ft below. The Jock of the Bushveld Trail is an easy, but beautiful trail that retraces the route followed by ox-wagon transport suppliers in the 1880’s. Jock was of course, the dog immortalised in Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s book and the author’s loyal companion. We pass Fitzpatrick’s camp site and the grave of the legendary dog before returning to the sleepy town of Graskop.

Here, creative entrepreneurs have installed an Otis elevator on the sides of the gorge and visitors can explore the otherwise inaccessible indigenous forests. This is an elevator ride worth taking and we will spend some time in the forests after lunch.

The Panorama Route offers majestic views of Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondawels and the Blyde River Canyon and dam. Our second day starts with a visit to the potholes, a series of dramatic cylindrical shapes ground into the river bed by waterborne sand and rock. The hike that follows offers stunning scenery and peaceful paths through indigenous forests and along bubbling brooks.

Combine this this short trip with our Kruger walking safari or insert it into any self-drive or safari program.

Our first choice of hotel is the Summerfields Rose Estate in Hazyview. This family-owned and operated retreat is located on a working macadamia and rose farm.

Beautifully appointed tents line a shaded river and guests are welcome to explore the farm between activities. The world’s best vegan macadamia ice cream is made here, as are Buttanut nut butters and Duke gin. Along with the fabulous on-site restaurant, these culinary gems are sure to delight your palate.

However, there are many suitable hotel options available, to suit a variety of budgets. Please chat to us if you would like to explore other options.

This is a year-round travel destination.

However, the summer months can be hot and wet, with heavy thundershowers common in the afternoons from December through February.

The winter months from June through September are dry and the air can be hazy from controlled burns in the lowveld.

Winter days are comfortable, while nights can be cold.

There are many trails in this area and we can design longer walking trips on the Panorama Route. Please ask us for more information
